Plainwell Impoundment Removal Action Weekly Construction Report: June 25, 2007

Work Completed: Week of June 18, 2007

Excavation of targeted materials in Removal Area 1 continued last week. After mixing in cement to absorb excess water, another 21 tractor trailer loads of soil were driven to Allied Waste's C&C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan for disposal. Clean soils were used to backfill the excavation area in anticipation of planting native vegetation when work in Removal Area 1 is complete.

Project teams also continued to build access roads in and around the removal areas on the northern/eastern side of the river, and installed a silt curtain in the river adjacent to Removal Area 2. This curtain will be used to contain river bottom materials that may be disturbed during excavation. Work also continued on the project support area, located at the downstream end of the project area near the Plainwell Dam and the 12th Street Landfill. Once this task is complete, all field staff from the construction contractors and the regulatory agencies will have a centralized base of operations.

Work Planned: Week of June 25, 2007

During the week of June 25, the first materials with higher concentrations of PCBs (or polychlorinated biphenyls) will be excavated from Removal Areas 1 and 2. After the drying process is complete, these materials will be transported to EQ's Wayne Disposal Landfill in Detroit. All removal and backfilling efforts in Removal Area 1 are expected to be completed this week.

Materials with low concentrations of PCB will also be excavated from Removal Area 2 and transported to Allied Waste's C&C Landfill for disposal.

Crews will also start clearing and grubbing on the southern/western side of the river (Removal Areas 3B and 4B), and field staff are expected to move into the operations base at the downstream end of the project area near the Plainwell Dam and the 12th Street Landfill.

Safety Notice

The former Plainwell Impoundment is now an active construction site. The safety of our field crews and local residents is our primary goal, so public access in this area will be limited for the duration of the project. The river near Plainwell will be closed during construction. Please observe the orange safety buoys at all times.
